The woman was hit by a Hoboken-bound train on the Pascack Valley line near the corner of Central and Railroad avenues around 9:20 p.m.
NJ Transit investigators were on scene, and the 250 passengers were transferred to another train.
The woman was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
An NJ Transit spokesman confirmed the incident, saying that the city woman went around the gates and stepped onto the tracks before she was struck.
