South Jersey Man Shot By Police Charged WIth Weapons Offenses: Prosecutor

A South Jersey man who was shot by police last month has been charged with several weapons offenses, authorities said.

Jalial Whitted, 37 of Absecon was charged in connection with a May 24 standoff with police in the 700 block of New Road in Absecon, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

Review of video surveillance showed Whitted displayed a gun inside the store, causing the employees to flee outside. While still inside the store Whitted discharged at least one round, the prosecutor said.

The interaction between Whitted and responding police from Absecon and Pleasantville resulted in Whitted suffering gunshot wounds. This is subject to Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office review Whitted was being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility. 

As per New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines, the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) was notified on the day of incident. The DCJ has designated the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office as the Independent Investigative Unit for the shooting with the Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity & Accountability acting as the Independent Supervisory Reviewer.
