Port Authority police rescued an Asia-bound dog who escaped from a Newark Airport terminal and got stuck in a ditch Tuesday morning.

The collie, named "Dart," got free from the United Airlines Pet Safe at Terminal C around 8 a.m., the authority's Joseph Pentangelo told Daily Voice.

Park Ridge's Frank Calabrese, who was driving his mother to the airport, pulled over his Ford Explorer to try and snag the precocious pooch.

"The dog was so damn fast and athletic, it was insane," Calabrese said. "He jumped right through the square markers that divide each post on the guardrail, running through all the traffic."

Dart "made his way through traffic and several parking lots from terminal C to a rental car lot located adjacent to a gas station," Pentangelo said. "The pet then ran into a flooded marsh area and was stuck in mud and unable to walk or run out of the ditch."

Authority police rowed about 50 yards, wrapped a snare around Dart and brought the otherwise uninjured dog into a boat, Pentangelo said.

Dart was cleaned up after a reunion with the Asian-bound owner.
