Project Homeless Connect provides information, direct and referral services, assistance and hospitality in a convenient one-stop location for people experiencing homelessness with everything together on one day.
At the same time, a one-day point-in-time survey was administered by agencies and volunteers combing the streets of Bergen County to estimate the number of homeless.
This helps gauge the services needed and where the needy are falling through the cracks.
Last year, 340 homeless people were counted; 19 percent of them were children, according to the survey.
Highlights of the event included one-stop access to Medicaid and food stamps orientation, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, employment, legal services, HIV counseling, flu shots, dental, blood and glucose screenings.
Parisian Beauty Academy of Hackensack provided free hair cuts and manicures. Guest bags of donated items including gift cards, warm clothing, personal hygiene items and socks were distributed, and breakfast, lunch, and dinner donated by local businesses was served.
