The model — who represented Hackensack High School on her hoodie — left her iPhone in the trailer and her makeup at home to discover what it was really like to be a survivalist.
Her mentor was a young, free spirited southerner named Cambo, who she said taught her lessons that she has since brought back to New Jersey.
"One of the hardest things I had to do was kill a chicken," said Ruber, 21. "Her made sure I didn't stop and wouldn't stop until I achieved that task [and others].
"I've taken that mindset and applied it to what I do here. No matter how hard something is I keep trying until I accomplish it."
Ruber says the show was a reality check, specifically the chicken challenge.
"I didn't realize how meat was processed and seeing the killing of animals on the show upset me," she said.
So much so that Ruber has become a pescatarian.
She also used the show as a platform to promote her cause: anti-bullying.
"Part of the episode is based on boxing," said Ruber of a hobby she picked up in high school.
"It shows not only physical strength but mental strength, and was an opportunity to teach kids about anti-bullying."
