Meanwhile, his girlfriend, Tina Allen of Lyndhurst is trying to raise money to help cover his expenses.
Smith, 34, suffered four fractured ribs and a hairline fracture to his pelvis in the Oct. 4 crash on Route 95 in Rye, N.Y.
“He is lucky to be alive,” said Allen, a Wyckoff haidresser who Smith's motorcycle club considers his wife.
Smith is home after surgery at Stamford Hospital.
“Emotionally he is really going through a lot,” Allen said. “The guy who had the heart attack died instantly and the guy behind him, Larry, face-planted on the pavement causing bleeding to the brain. It has taken a lot out of Jeff.”
Although he could be up ad around in six to eight weeks, the pain can last six months. If he's not careful, he could aggravate the ribs.
“With how physical his job is, he won’t be able to go back for at least eight weeks, probably not until January because there is so much lifting involved in his job,” Allen said.
In the meantime, Allen is trying to collect $5,000 to help cover the damage to her boyfriend's Harley ($2,500) and the ambulance bill ($875).
“He is racking up bills, being out of work, and it’s killing him,” she said.
