Kitman, a well-known TV critic, humorist and author turns 86 Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Kitman was a columnist for Newsday for 35 years and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1982. He is the author of nine books, including two on George Washington that combine humor with extensive historical research.

Born in Pittsburgh, his family moved to Brooklyn when he was a child. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School and City College of New York. He married Carol Sibushnick in 1951, was drafted and served in the Army from 1953-55 and started a family with Carol, who became a photographer.

They moved to Leonia in 1961 and became longtime residents, raising a son and two daughters. He was active in several town organizations and lived across the street from novelist Robert Ludlum. Watching Ludlum work on the first in a long list of thrillers, he said, inspired him to get serious about his own writing.

Fellow Leonian Bob Klapisch has described Kitman's writing style as sarcasm dried to a delicate crisp.
