GARFIELD, N.J. – A Garfield man with a history of assaulting police barricaded himself in his apartment for 2½ hours before tactical officers stormed in and arrested him, authorities said.

Officer Nicholas Kopacz pulled over a white Honda Accord driven by 42-year-old Spencer Dearing on Cambridge Avenue near the intersection of Monroe Street just after 2:30 a.m. Friday, Capt. Darren Sucorowski said.

Dearing stopped the car, then put it in reverse, hitting Kopacz’s police cruiser, Sucorowski said.

He then got out and ran into his home on Monroe Street despite several commands to stop, the captain said.

Dearing then “shut the front door on Officer Kopacz as he tried to stop him from entering the house,” Sucorowski said

Officers secured the area and called in the Garfield Police Emergency Services Unit, along with the unit negotiator, in an effort to encourage Dearing to come out peacefully, the captain said.

Just after 5 a.m., they forced their way in and seized Dearing, who was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

Dearing -- whose criminal record includes arrests on charges of assaulting police in 2013 and 2016 -- remained held without bail in the Bergen County Jail pending a hearing.
