The Ball is on Friday, Feb. 18, followed Sunday afternoon by the installation brunch at The Venetian in Garfield.
It’s the personal relationships the staff develops with youngsters at the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield that helps get — and keep — them on the right path, said Paul J. Casey, chief executive officer of the Garfield Boys & Girls Club.
“Garfield’s young people need our help,” he said. “Too many children and teens are not receiving the guidance they need to graduate from high school, to avoid the effects of violence, gangs and drugs or to become responsible adults.”
Casey cited national statistics on high school dropout rates, obesity and violence among youth, which he called “staggering.” In Garfield, nearly half of all children in public schools are eligible to receive free or reduced lunch. The dropout rate is 4.8% (New Jersey’s state average is 1.7%).
“The Boys & Girls Club of Garfield is dedicated to changing these statistics,” Casey said. “Slowly but surely, we believe we can make a difference in the lives of Garfield youth.”
The club is always seeking dedicated mentors, as well as donors and even trustees who can help with organizational leadership, governance and fundraising, he said.
“If you aren’t already involved with us, let me extend a personal invitation: Get on the bus,” Casey added. “We are moving forward and we are changing the world.”
