Officers responded around 1:14 a.m. on Thursday, April 3 to a report of a suspicious person near the intersection of Center Street and Arthur Street, according to Clifton Police Lt. Robert Anderson.
The witness, an off-duty law enforcement officer from another agency, told police he saw the man enter an unlocked 2012 Mazda, rummage through the interior, and then try to enter other parked cars.
Police located the suspect, identified as Allen Bright, 24, of Brooklyn, NY, near the intersection of Arthur Street and Ackerman Avenue, officials said.
Bright was positively identified by the witness and arrested at the scene, police said. He was charged with burglary and then turned over to the Passaic County Sheriff's Office Corrections Hub.
Investigators later confirmed that nothing was taken from the Mazda.
Police are reminding the public to lock their vehicles and remove all valuables when parking.
