Anthony Sclafani, 83, Garfield Resident

GARFIELD, N.J. – Anthony "Nino" Sclafani, of Garfield, died Monday, Feb. 22. He was 83.

He was born in Bolognetta, Sicily, to Filippo and Cira Sclafani. He lived there until 1963, when he immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Garfield. 

He served 50 years as the treasurer of the St. Anthony Society in Garfield. 

He worked at Marcal Paper in Elmwood Park for four years, then was as a machine operator 30 years in the textile industry for Applique Co. in Passaic and Missbrenner Prints in Clifton. He retired in 1997. 

He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church in Garfield, and was a member of Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dora (Galvano); a daughter, Alcira Malleo and her husband, Antonino; three grandchildren, Michael, Steven and Christina, and her husband, Christopher; and a sister, Carmela Giammanco.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Maria Bordonaro, Filippa Sclafani and Michelangelo D’Ai.

Visitation will take place Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will be held Thursday, arriving at the Aloia Funeral Home at 8 a.m. followed by a 9 a.m. mass at Our Lady of Mount Virgin Church, Garfield. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Saddle Brook.
