GARFIELD, N.J.– Malachi Dye was named the Boys & Girls Club of Garfield's 2016 Youth of the Year on Monday.
The Boys & Girls club has been honoring club teens since 1947. Those members who earn the award "embody the values of leadership service; academic excellence; and healthy lifestyles," according to the organization.
Dye, a sophomore at Garfield High School, joined the Boys & Girls Club nine years ago while his parents were going through a divorce.
As a member, he's participated in various club activities and community service projects.
"I assist kids with homework, we do activities in the gym, we go to the park sometimes," he said in a 2015 Meet the Leaders appearance. "It's just amazing. I love helping them with their homework."
Outside of his volunteer work, Dye runs track for the Boilermakers. He's also a junior deacon at the Friendship Baptist Church.
