U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez called for the event following anti-Semitic threats against Jewish community centers in New Jersey and around the country.

Christie suggested that combating anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred must begin with citizens speaking out against it in day-to-day life.

"It is not good enough to wait for someone in authority to do something about it. We need to do something about it," Christie said.

The event, which attracted hundreds, was held at the Kaplen JCC was in response to a rash of bomb threats at local Jewish Community Centers and increased anti-Semitic incidents across the U.S.

Booker urged New Jersey citizens to be active, rather than reactive, in fighting against prejudice in their community.

"[Having hope] is saying that despair, hatred and violence will never have the last word," Booker said. "Right now we must be people of hope."

Senator Robert Menendez, Congressmen Josh Gottheimer and Bill Pascrell also were in attendance at the rally..

"We are the most ethnically diverse state in the nation. Every day, we together fight the fights that need to be fought," Christie said.

Three state assemblymen called on state Attorney General Christopher Porrino to increase police presence at Jewish centers, reports.

"We as a country understand that there's no Jewish way, or Democratic way or New Jersey way to move forward. There is one way and that is the American way," Booker said.
