Jah’Zyer Montgomery, of Garfield, was shot multiple times around 5:05 p.m. on Saturday, March 22, near 12th Avenue and East 24th Street, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Officer-In-Charge Patrick Murray.
Montgomery was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. An investigation led detectives to identify a 17-year-old male from Paterson as a suspect. He was taken into custody on March 31, without incident, and remains detained pending court proceedings.
The juvenile is charged with acts of delinquency that would be considered murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose if he were an adult, officials said.
A visitation and celebration of life for Montgomery will be held on Friday, April 4, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Canaan Baptist Church, 535 East 22nd Street, Paterson. A burial will follow at Crest Haven Cemetery, 750 Passaic Ave, Clifton, at 1 p.m.
The case has been referred to the Passaic County Family Court, Juvenile Part. Authorities said the investigation is active and ongoing.
