LEONIA, N.J. -- Three types of swordfighting classes are set to begin this month at the Leonia recreation center.
Two are for adults only, but one is for those 10 and up.
- Classical French foil -- Tuesdays nights, from 6-7 p.m. -- 10 years old through adults
Fencing as a martial art increases confidence, self-respect and coordination. Classes require both mental and physical exertion, which will help you develop strength, stamina, flexibility and mental acuity.
This beginner’s class will focus on fundamentals with this thrusting weapon. Returning students will need to purchase a mask and jacket, and will begin fencing with each other.
- Longsword class -- Tuesday nights, from 7-8 p.m. -- 18 and up
The knightly art of longsword was used in Europe for hundreds of years to fight in wars, duels and personal combat. This simple sword can be used with one or two hands.
This class will focus on the fundamental posture and movement before going into cutting and thrusting, followed by the primary guards and defenses. Students will begin working on partner drills by the end of the session.
- Northern Italian dueling sabre -- Tuesday nights, from 8-9 p.m. -- 18 and up

Registration is open at the Leonia Recreational Center. The full winter recreation brochure is here. The registration form is the last page. As a general policy, late registration will be accepted, space permitting, but will not be pro-rated.
The classes cost $150 for resident, $175 for non-residents.The classes will run for nine weeks, from Tuesday, Jan. 19, through March 22, with no class on Feb. 16. The location will be the dance studio, off the gymnasium.
