UPDATE: Power was restored to nearly 30,000 PSE&G customers in Hudson and Bergen counties tonight following a failure at a switching station roughly 90 minutes earlier that a spokeswoman said directly affected four substations.

The 5 p.m. incident created outages in Cliffside Park, Edgewater and Fairview, as well as in North Bergen, West New York, Guttenberg and a portion of Weehawken.

Hudson got hit the hardest, with more than 20,000 losing power, according to 6:30 p.m. updated figures from the PSE&G website.

Edgewater had the most in Bergen –nearly 4,000 customers lost power, according to the utility’s site.

A total of 3,292 were without power in Edgewater and nearly 1,1719 in Cliffside Park, it said.

More than 11,000 customers sustained outages in North Bergen and 6,729 in West New York, PSE&G reported on its website.

All told, 9,018 customers in Bergen and 20,330 in Hudson were plunged into darkness, according to the utility’s posted figures.

The cause of the outage was under investigation, said Nancy Tucker-Datrio, communications manager for PSEG Power.
