A Palisades Park barbershop owner gave a woman laser treatment that severely damaged her face, said authorities who arrested him for illegally practicing medicine.
Young Hwan Choi, the 72-year-old owner of Shil La Barber Shop on Broad Avenue, was charged with aggravated assault and the unlicensed practice of medicine.
Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo said his detectives and their borough colleagues investigated after the victim alerted them earlier this month of the November 2017 procedure.
“The surgery caused significant bodily injury, including scars [that] were visible on the victim’s face and chin,” Calo said.
Choi, a Korean national who records show is living in the U.S. legally, was booked into the Bergen County Jail on Friday. A judge ordered him released hours later, pending further court action, under New Jersey’s 2017 bail reform law.
Choi is scheduled for a Feb. 6 first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
