HOW YOU CAN HELP: Rescue groups help animals in need, and now a Fort Lee woman is trying to come to their aid.

“It’s something I’m honored to do,” said Maggie Conway, who has organized a Feb. 21 fundraiser for two rescue groups at Andiamo Restaurant in Haworth.

“Hopefully we can raise some money for the dogs in need,” she said.

Conway, works for Coach in Manhattan, has owned bulldogs for more than 16 years.

“I know how hard and expensive a sickly dog can be,” she told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

That’s makes the burden even greater for those who cannot afford it.

Rescue organizations, in particular, know what it means to care for abused and neglected animals.

That’s why Conway is trying to help Special Needs K9, out of Oakland, and Belmar-based Mid-Atlantic Bulldog Rescue.

Both are non-profits dedicated to rescuing animals with physical, medical and other special needs and finding them good homes.

“Both have gone into their own pockets to help the animals in need,” Conway said. “They do the hard part — going into shelters, finding animals left abandoned on the streets or getting calls from homes that want to surrender their animals.

“They never hesitate, either. They jump right away. I’ve seen it firsthand.”

The volunteers from both groups “nurse the dogs back to health, both physically and mentally,” Conway added. “That means taking care of vet bills, trainer bills.”

The special event begins at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 21 and features hors d’ouevres, beer, win and soft drinks. Rescue merchandise and dog treats will be available for sale. Raffles will be held.

Even if you can’t attend, you can contribute (See flyer below for full information).

“I have a soft spot for animals,” Conway told CLIFFVIEW PILOT. “I especially want to help the ones who have been abused and neglected.”

In the cases of Special Needs K9 and Mid-Atlantic Bulldog Rescue, she said, “it’s simple:

“Donations are needed to help the rescuers do what they do.”
