LEONIA, N.J. — Norma M. Murphy (Maldonado), a longtime resident of Leonia, died Dec. 17 at the Jewish Home for Living in Rockleigh, N.J. She was 78.
One of her most notable accomplishments was graduating from William Paterson College in 2002 with her bachelor’s degree. She received it a day before her 65th birthday, after starting her college education in 1978.
Before retiring, she had been employed as a bookkeeper for several different companies. She also was a parishioner of Leonia Presbyterian Church in Leonia, a member of the Leonia Woman's Club, a member of the Baker's Street Irregulars and a past president of the Leonia Player's Guild.
She was born in Mexico while her father, who was a cameraman, was filming a movie but moved to New York City with her parents and siblings. She met her future husband after he moved to NYC with his family, who were in vaudeville.
She was predeceased by her husband Herbert Murphy and brother Cesar Maldonado.
She is survived by her daughter Heather Murphy and her husband Thomas Schroeder of Park Ridge; her sister of Mary Maldonado of Forest Hills, N.Y.; nephew Rudolph Fontane of Florida and niece Valerie Ginesin of Forest Hills, N.Y. ; grandmother of Ella and Tillman; cousin to dozens, especially the Vega family originally of Bogota.
