LEONIA, N.J. -- The Rotary Club of The Palisades will honor three Leonians for their service on Thursday, June 16, as part of the Rotary Club's yearly Installation Dinner.
Hans and Ellie Spiegel and Philip Choi will be named Paul Harris Fellows for their service. All three exemplify the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self." Non-Rotarians are also welcome to honor them at the Installation Dinner.
The Spiegels are being honored for their six decades advocating for social justice in the U.S. and abroad. They have participated in the Sunday Peace Vigil Group since 2001, and they help organize International Peace Day with Leonia High School students each year.
The couple also visits jails and detention-center inmates as part of the Methodist Church's Outreach Committee. Ellie is active with Community of Friends in Action, which helps provide social services and meals for local day workers, primarily Guatemalans.
"Philip Choi is being recognized because of the way he spans two cultures," organizers note. "Phil is unusual for being involved with both his traditional home culture and the political and social culture in which he now lives in the States."
Choi quickly became helpful in bridging the cultural gap. As the Korean population grew, so did police, school and fire department requests for his translation and cultural understanding. He became an advocate for the Korean community.
Choi also joined the Rent Leveling Board, Planning Board and many similar groups. He also ran for Leonia council in 2008 and was elected for two terms. He was also one of the founders of this Rotary Club.
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Rotarians have a tradition of honoring others this way, and the club will contribute $1,000 to Rotary International in the name of each of these three, to show appreciation for their service.
Tickets for the dinner are $40. Buy them here. The evening will begin with cocktails at 6:30 at Vitale's, 293 Queen Anne Rd., in Teaneck. Dinner will begin at 7.
