The high school organization intends to reach more people not only in Glen Rock but elsewhere, said the group's adviser, Nicole Rusin.
A T-shirt sale aims to raise funds for guest speakers or other events to make people more aware of the group.
The alliance serves an important role, said senior Jordan McMahon, the organization's president.McMahon, an openly gay student, said many other teens don't have anyone to talk to about their feelings.
"You can only be happy when you feel like you're being your full self," McMahon told Daily Voice. "which is hard for a lot of people in high school if you feel you're going to be judged or excluded."
The alliance currently has more than 160 members, many of them straight. Forty or so attend monthly meetings, McMahon said.
The shirt sale will help some of those ideas from the meetings come to fruition. Sophmore Eric Tymoshenko said they have sold more than expected. The white shirts, emblazoned with the phrase "Be a voice, not an echo," raised $470 as of Oct. 28.
"It's just about getting out there," Rusin said, "making ourselves more present and using the money to educate others."
