GLEN ROCK, N.J. – A Glen Rock mentorship program has been awarded the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office “BE WISE Award.”
The program, called “Pathways for Exceptional Children,” develops high school student mentors to work with elementary school children with special needs.
The program was created by Melinda Jennis, a mother of an autistic child. She came up with the idea after she said she recognized a void in the social lives of special needs children who did not get invited to play dates and birthday parties.
Jennis provides training to high school students, who in turn volunteer to develop and attend social programs for special needs children in Glen Rock.
The program currently has 55 trained mentors, and 12 more will be trained next week.
The award is "in recognition of your efforts to combat hate & violence," states a plaque given to the school district.
