GLEN ROCK, N.J. -- A Glen Rock church employee who recently was the New Milford Democratic Club president stole nearly $600 in church donations over five weeks before being caught on surveillance video, authorities said.
Officials at All Saints Church brought police surveillance footage of Sean M. Massaro 24 of New Milford, formerly of Glen Rock, stealing donation envelopes after Sunday Police Chief Dean Ackermann said.
After being confronted by police, Massaro admitted taking $582 and was charged with theft, the chief said.
He was released pending a Feb. 23 hearing in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
Massaro was listed as the 2018 president of the New Milford Democratic Club, a position recently assumed by Vanessa Hurley.
He took a part-time job with the church last September as director of children and youth ministries, Ackermann said.
Church officials "first suspected that money was being taken just after the beginning of the year, with one collection having no cash donations at all, which was highly unusual," the chief said.
So they installed a camera in the office where the collections are stored, he said.
