Police nearly had a suspect on 5th Avenue, but he fled onto 16th Street and vanished through area backyards, Sgt. Brian Metzler said Sunday morning.

The 62-year-old attendant from Paterson told police the robber was carrying a gas can, claiming his car broke down, when he approached him just before 5 a.m at the BP station on Wagaraw Road.

When he turned to open the gas can, the attendant said, the robber hit him with "an unknown silver object, then forced [him] into the office," where took the cash and put the cigarette packs in a black plastic bag, Sgt. Brian Metzler aid.

The attendant told police the robber fled across the Lincoln Bridge into Paterson.

He described him as black, in his 30s, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a black baseball cap with a red rim and gloves.

The attendant sustained facial injuries but refused medical treatment, Metzler said.

"Possible evidence was recovered in the area where the [robber] fled and will be processed," he said.
