Gun safety officer Martin Beresford shot himself in his left thigh last month while attempting to holster his personal Springfield Armory .45 caliber handgun at RTSP on Route 10, the Daily Record reports.

The bullet traveled several inches before shooting out of his leg above the knee, the article says, sighting police documents.

He was treated by EMS when police arrived just after 2:30 p.m. Jan. 16, and taken to the hospital for treatment, according to the Daily Record.

It was unclear if the gun malfunctioned or if he had his finger on the trigger, the article says.

The officer underwent additional training before returning to work, and was undergoing a recertification exercise at the time of the accident, a RTSP spokeswoman told the media outlet.
