The contract went to garbage collection service Cali, which is already contracted by Fair Lawn for garbage pickup.

Recycling division employees will be transferred to the Department of Public Works to fill holes left by retiring workers, Cosgrove said.

"We're saving money not only on salary but also on not having to buy garbage trucks that cost $250,000 a piece," Cosgrove said.

"Plus we did it without firing any employees."

The leftover recycling trucks will be converted and used for snow plowing, the mayor said.
