GLEN ROCK, N. J. -- Glen Rock High School senior Samantha Arehart was awarded the highest honor for Girl Scouts -- the Gold Award -- after hosting a workshop to teach senior citizens how to use social media.

Arehart, of Glen Rock, hosted a workship at Glen Court Senior Residence to teach senior citizens to use Facebook. She recruited other kids to help with instruction, and each person who attended the workshop created a profile and learned how to connect with family and friends.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn and requires the completion of a leadership project of at least 80 hours. Each girl chose an issue that needs attention, seek out advice, then tackle it to bring about positive change.

“Many senior citizens in Glen Rock have family and friends who live far away,” Arehart said. “Facebook is perfect way for them to be in constant contact with their loved ones through pictures and messages. It is also a great way for seniors to stay informed about community issues through the various Glen Rock Facebook pages.”

At Glen Rock High School, Arehart is a member of National Honor Society and Latin club. She is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has been a Girl Scout in Troop No. 119 since kindergarten.

“Girl Scouts has helped me develop many leadership skills,” she said. “It has helped me with organizational skills and my public speaking abilities. It has also been a lot of fun."

After graduating, Arehart plans to study video game design and eventually own her own video game studio.
