GLEN ROCK, N.J. — The deadline for entries for a 12-year-old Glen Rock boy's contest to help young cancer patients is Friday, Dec. 18.
Carson Schraer, 12, started an art contest to spruce up the food containers given to children with cancer and blood disorders and their families.
The containers distributed through the HealthBarn Foundation's Healing Meals program are plain, with only a nutrition label.
Carson decided they could look better.
"I thought that fun labels with inspirational messages would cheer up the kids who are going through cancer treatment," he said.
Judges will choose winning labels to add to the food tins. Winners will come from three age categories from kindergarten to fifth grade.
Labels should be colorful and can include inspirational phrases such as "stay strong" or "always believe," according to Carson's rules.
Carson's mom, Leslie, said it's been a positive experience for her son.
"He had no understanding that there are kids in chemo all day and what it means for their families and how we take the day-to-day things for granted," she said.
"This opened his eyes a little bit to what it means when a child in a family is sick."
\It costs $5 to enter, with the money going toward HealthBarn Foundation and Healing Meals.
