At approximately 5:35 a.m., the Northvale Police Department was dispatched to the area of 6 Volvo Dr. in Rockleigh for a reported road collapse involving a motor vehicle, according to a statement from Northvale police.

Officers found that the roadway had collapsed due to a major water main break that happened overnight.

Police say the driver couldn’t see the sinkhole because it was hidden beneath a large amount of water. He was able to escape on his own and was not injured, authorities said.

Photos from the scene show the car submerged in murky water, nearly swallowed whole by the collapsed road. The Rockleigh and Norwood fire departments assisted at the scene.

Northvale Police are continuing to monitor the area while crews assess the damage.
