Witnesses told police they saw a man later identified as James J. Smith fleeing the scene in his girlfriend's car while she lay injured on Pottstown Pike April 14, according to West Whiteland Det. Scott Pezick.

Despite the woman's injuries, Pezick told Daily Voice she is currently stable.

Details on the status of the pregnancy were confidential, Pezick noted.

Police were able to locate Smith later that day at his Chester, Delaware County home, where they arrested him and took him into custody.

Smith was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

He is being held at a local jail on $34,000 bail.
