Police responding to 45th Street and Avenue E found Devron R. Purvis, 38, and the boy fighting around 9:20 p.m., Capt. Eric Amato said.

The boy was walking in the area when Purvis attacked him and stabbed him in the back with a pocket knife, Amato said.

Local residents and one of the boy's family members broke up the fight, and the knife used by Purvis was found nearby on the ground, authorities said.

Purvis had suffered a cut on his hand and an eye injury, police said. He and the boy were taken to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment.

Purvis was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and several weapons offenses, Amato said.
