The man, who says he is an inspector who represents the fictitious "Metro Fire Prevention" company, entered the businesses Sunday and tried to charge them for inspecting and servicing the fire extinguishers, even preparing detailed receipts.

He didn't perform any work, police said.

He is believed to be a former fire official based on his knowledge of firefighting equipment.

He is described as white, about 40 years old and standing 6'2" tall with a heavy build. He is either bald or has a crew cut.

Anyone with information on the suspect is asked to call the Westfield Police Department at 908-789-4000 (extension “0” for the dispatch center).
