Bodycam footage shows Newark police officers capturing an ex-con who forced a pair of men to drive him away from scene of an armed robbery at gunpoint, authorities said.

Shukri M. Dunell, 25, forced two men to rob an ATM inside of a Bergen Street store at gunpoint, and then forced them to drive him away from the scene a silver Ford pickup truck belonging to one of the victims around 11:50 a.m., Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara said.

An officer located near the scene spotted the truck heading northbound on Chadwick Avenue, and began following the vehicle while corresponding with other officers over the police radio, bodycam footage shows.

The officer hops in the passenger's seat of another officer's vehicle and the two begin to follow the truck.

Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara reports the arrest of Shukri M. Dunell, 25, of Newark, in connection with an armed robbery and abduction that occurred yesterday. “I commend officers of the 5th Precinct for locating the victim and quickly apprehending this armed suspect,” Director O’Hara said. “These officers stopped a convicted felon from committing an armed robbery, chased him down while armed with an illegal gun in his hand, and managed to safely place him under arrest without anyone being injured. I praise the officers for their bravery and restraint, and we are grateful that this incident was interrupted before any further violence was committed by this suspect.” At approximately 11:50 a.m., police received a report of two male robbery victims being forced to drive a male suspect, who was armed with a handgun, in the victim's silver Ford pickup truck. The suspect had forced one of the victims to remove cash from an ATM located inside a store at 776 Bergen Street. Police from the 5th Precinct observed the victim’s vehicle and conducted a motor vehicle stop at Hawthorne Avenue and Wainwright Street. At that point, the suspect, Dunell, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Dunell was pursued on foot after an officer observed a gun in his hand. He was immediately apprehended, and police recovered the handgun, which was found to be loaded. Dunell is charged with two counts of robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a large capacity magazine, certain persons prohibited from weapon possession and resisting arrest. These charges are merely accusations. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Police stopped the truck at Hawthorne Avenue and Wainwright Street, where Dunell got out of the vehicle and fled on foot, police said.

Dunell began running, initiating a foot pursuit, and an officer spotted a gun in his hand, which was later determined to be loaded, O'Hara said.

Officers were able to catch up with Dunell and arrest him.

He was charged with two counts of robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, possession of a large capacity magazine, certain persons prohibited from weapon possession and resisting arrest.

It was not clear what Dunnel was previously convicted of.
