At 11 a.m., police responded to the 600 block of Dewitt St. to check on the welfare of multiple dogs, Captain Christopher Guenther of the Linden Police Department said. During their investigation, two officers were attacked by one of the dogs. Another officer shot the dog once, killing the dog, Guenther said.

One officer was treated on scene and another officer was taken to a hospital with non-serious injuries, Guenther said.

The Union County Prosecutor Office's and New Jersey Attorney General's Office will be the lead investigators on the case, Guenther said.

Police ask that residents avoid the area.
