Residents Displaced By Four-Alarm Jersey City Fire See Community Support

Three homes were damaged and 17 people were displaced following a four-alarm fire in Jersey City on Wednesday, April 5. Now the community wants to help.

Two fundraisers have been launched on GoFundMe to assist people displaced by the blaze. Combined, the fundraisers have raised almost $27,000 from more than 300 donors, as of Monday, April 10. 

Simone Monahan and her husband Danny launched her fundraiser after she said they lost everything in the fire. 

"If the situation weren’t so bad I wouldn’t even be doing this, but I have no choice but to ask for your help," Simone said.  "We’re going to have to replace everything. I can’t even begin to think about the things that we can’t replace like our pictures and other mementos."

Simone said they are looking for a new apartment, but will only move somewhere that will take their dog, King.  We’re 

"Please help us as we try and navigate through this difficult time and get back on our feet," Simone said. "Anything at all helps."

Madeline Vazquez created a fundraiser for her friend, Oscar Ruiz, who also lost his home and belongings in the fire.

"Any funding would greatly help relieve some of the financial stress this situation has created," Vazquez said. "While he may not be able to replace items with sentimental value, this will help him begin the process of rebuilding his life. Even if you don't know Oscar personally, he is a kind and generous soul that would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it."
