A 13-year-old student at Newark's Science Park High School is coping with Brain AVM (arteriovenous malformation) and a family friend has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help defray recovery expenses.
Emilia Santos is a "fantastic student" who, along with her mom Dina, are "pillars of the community," the campaign's organizer wrote. Her condition -- which typically emerges sometime after age 10 -- causing bleeding in the brain and spinal cord.
She is currently hospitalized for treatment of the condition, which can cause symptoms including seizures, brain damage and stroke if not treated.
