Community Rallies Around Pink Slipped Bagel Employee

For 21 years, Joanie Monroe was a fixture at Fanwood Bagels, to the point she was known as "Joanie Bagels." But now, she's out of a job.

Monroe was recently let go from Fanwood Bagels as new ownership takes over. A fundraiser has been set up to help her deal with the loss of her weekly paycheck. As of Wednesday, May 10, almost $7,000 has been raised.

"With an uncanny ability to remember everyone's name, Joanie always managed to make you leave with a smile on your face, even when you didn't feel like smiling," Neda Yarnall, who organized the fundraiser, said.

Yarnall said Monroe has become a fixture of the Scotch Plains-Farnwood community.

"Joanie has been there after every one of our children's sporting events, dance recitals, school events," Yarnall wrote.

Monroe never got an opportunity to say goodbye the customers she served, Yarnall said and is also concerned about paying her bills and her future employment prospects.
