Mary Tene, who was disheveled, sullen and jumpy during a January court appearance, was neatly groomed, calm and cordial today to Presiding Superior Court Judge Liliana DeAvila-Silebi, who sentenced her to two years’ probation and 212 days she spent in jail.
Accompanying her to court was her husband, Jimmy Miller.

Miller last month received two years probation, as well, after pleading guilty to a disorderly person simple assault charge for his role in the Sept. 12 attack, in which his then-82-year-old mother lost several teeth and sustained a concussion.
Authorities at the time told CLIFFVIEW PILOT that the 5-foot-5-inch, 105-pound Tene beat the older woman after she tried to convince her to kick a drug habit.
Tene, who has a history of drug abuse and violent crimes in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Florida, then high-tailed it across the Hudson.
She was tracked down three weeks later despite cutting and coloring her hair and insisting to detectives who found her that she was someone else, Englewood police said. After being extradited to New Jersey, she remained in the Bergen County Jail until she was bailed out on April 29.
Today, Tene told the sentencing judge that she’s determined to leave drugs behind because she has plans for the future.
“If I’m doing good down the road with my probation, as I expect to, I hope I could get an early release,” she said. “I’m going to make it my business to do well in probation, because I have five beautiful grandchildren.
“I don’t want to look like a bad grandmother,” Tene added. “I want to really enjoy them.”

DeAvila-Silebi agreed. “That’s what you should do,” she said.
The judge then offered Tene the chance to reduce her probation to one year once she paid $205 in fines.
“How much can you pay monthly?” DeAvila-Silebi asked.
“I’d like to pay it in full today,” Tene responded. “Some family members gave me some money.”
“Thank you so much, your honor, for believing in me,” she added.
Tene later gave defense attorney Aaron Miller a hug and a kiss on the cheek before leaving court with a smile.
