Breaking News: 'We Were All Home': Brazen Bandits Steal Distinctive SUV From Bergen Family's Locked Garage

Robert H. Schopper, 81, Of Tenafly

TENAFLY, N.J. -- Robert H. Schopper, formerly of Bergenfield, passed away June 16, 2016, in the company of his wife, Joan, at their home in Tenafly. He was 81.

Raised in Ridgewood, Queens, Schopper was the second son of Margaret and Oscar Schopper, and younger brother to Arthur Schopper.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Japan from 1954-56. He then worked as a photographer for American Photograph Corporation, in the computer departments of various banks and ultimately became an auditor for the IRS.

Known for his incredible ability to take naps anywhere, Schopper's family cherished his affinity for big words, his love of cooking and Woodloch Pines and his skill in the game of Bridge (and lack of skill in the game of Pictionary).

He was never afraid to try strange foods (even if it resulted in making the entire house smell for days).

Schopper is survived by his wife of 55 years, Joan (Hughes) Schopper; children, Teresa (Schopper) Behan and Thomas Schopper; children-in-law, Kevin Behan and Janice (Bookstaver) Schopper; brother-in-law, Peter J. Hughes; sister-in-law, Maria (Ferrari) Schopper; grandsons, Brian and Daniel Schopper; and his many friends and family.

A wake will be conducted from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Riewerts Memorial Home, 187 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield. There will be a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Evangelist Church, 29 N. Washington Ave., Bergenfield.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Friends of Music of the Bergenfield Public Schools, 80 S. Prospect Ave., Bergenfield, NJ 07621 or to The Barn Theatre, PO Box 102, Montville, NJ 07045.
