This year's grant recipients provide services to meet peoples' needs of all ages in categories such as health and mental health, children and youth, older adults, arts programming, women, hunger, environment and volunteers.
The 2016-17 grant recipients are: Arts Horizon, ArtWorks –The Naomi Cohain Foundation, Bergen Family Center, Bergen Performing Arts Center, Bergen Volunteer Center, Calvary Care Community Development Corporation, Center for Food Action, The Center for Hope and Safety, Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund, Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, Flat Rock Brook Nature Association, Friends of John T. Wright Arena, JCC Thurnauer School of Music, Office of Concern Food Pantry, Planned Parenthood of Central & Greater North Jersey, Southeast Senior Center for Independent Living, St. Paul's Afterschool Choir Program, Tenafly Nature Center, Vantage Health System, West Side Infant and Teen Program, Women's Rights Information Center, YWCA of Bergen County and Visiting Homemaker Bergen County.
The Harriet Tanner Impact Grant was awarded to Vantage Health System to hire start-up staff for the new behavioral health home program for Bergen County residents. The program will coordinate physical and mental health care and wellness activities for Medicaid-eligible adults diagnosed with mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar and a chronic physical health condition.
"The importance of The Community Chest's mission to lead initiatives and support nonprofits that make our communities stronger and benefit people in need in eastern Bergen County is evident from the total request for annual grants, $260,214, and a record eight applications for impact grants," said Richard Kennedy, president of The Community Chest's board of managers. "The requests for funding continue to outpace the amount raised. In 2014, the organization's grant awards serviced 40,000 people. We are working diligently to close the gap and meet the needs of more people in the future."
