Prints of the finalists' artwork will be for sale, and all proceeds will be donated to ArtWorks: The Naomi Cohain Foundation in Englewood.

The organization uses creativity and the arts to help children battling chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

All district students in kindergarten through their senior year were welcome to submit a piece of art that answers the question: What does it mean to have heart?

“Sometimes it’s just a cool image or it has meaning behind it," said Pamela Duffus who helps manage the event. “We’ll have about 20 from each school, and 14 are selected for the final showing.”

The first year included mostly high school students, and they raised over $1,000 for victims of Hurricane Sandy, and the following year, Shelter Our Sisters, which is not The Center for Hope and Safety.

Semi-finalists' work will be displayed at the Donald L. Sanschagrin II Gallery at the Junior and Senior High School this month before faculty and staff vote by district.

Finalists' work will also be shown at the Westwood Gallery in downtown Westwood, where an opening reception will be held on Thurs., Feb. 4. The gallery is expected to run for 3 weeks.

“It’s a way to give back to the community, and it brings the community together with the students. It’s not just about selling something. They are signing their works and it gives them a gallery experience.”

Students receive their own special pens to sign their own work.

After Jan. 15, they should all know who the finalists are who created some of the best two-dimensional pieces of work.

Individuals pack the gallery each year in one of their largest events, according to Duffus.

“We always like to top the year before. It’s fun.”
