As always, the stolen cars were left unlocked with key fobs inside, authorities said.
“It is becoming increasingly more dangerous for the Closter Police and the residents of Closter every time a vehicle is stolen or these individuals come to Closter in attempt to steal another vehicle,” Detective Sgt. Vincent Aiello said. “Many of these incidents involve gang activity.”
Shortly before 4 a.m Tuesday, borough police grabbed a juvenile driver while his passengers bolted on foot after a car stolen out of Jersey City crashed at Demarest Avenue and Shraalenburg Road shortly before 4 a.m. Wednesday, Detective Sgt. Vincent Aiello.
Those who got away may have fled in a vehicle that a borough resident who leaves near the crash site had stolen, Aiello said.
Earlier this month, around the same time of day, Closter police chased two stolen cars at once.
One fled eastbound toward Route 9W but the second crashed, with the occupants fleeing foot, Aiello said. It, too, had been reported stolen out of Jersey City.
Around 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, police found a car stolen out of Monroe Township on a side street on the Eat Hill, the sergeant said.
Apparently, the thieves came to Closter in that car, then stole a nearby resident’s vehicle, he said.
Police urged everyone to lock their vehicle doors and never leave the key fobs inside.
