CLOSTER, NJ — Temple Emanu-el of Closter held a dedication ceremony on Sun. Nov. 1 at the culmination of its five year Campaign for the Next Generation.

The campaign raised $5 million to beautify the temple’s daily chapel and construct and renovate space in the 14-year-old building to meet the demands of a growing membership that now includes more than 800 families.

Some of the funds went towards the purchase of stained glass windows in the daily chapel that are not only decorative but functional.

Nancy Katz and her husband, Mark Liebowitz of Nancy Katz/Wilmark Studios were behind a six-month project depicting the creation of the world. They operate in Massachusetts and have advised a number of Bergen County institutions on projects.

“They were very clear and there was a lot of direct sunlight coming in," said Gabrielle Altman, the development and administrative coordinator, "so we decided to add stained glass windows to add beauty to this already beautiful space."

“That’s one of the challenges," Katz said, "integrating into the site in the specific community that we’re designing for.

"I don’t know how many artists have come up with that - using a spiral a rhythm - the repetition of God speaking. We creatively problem-solve."

"The light is alive - an incredible place,” her husband said. “We’re honored and blessed when the congregation trusts us to have an impact on their environment."
