Unlike most pet stores, Thomaston Feed displays product information on the shelves and the brothers are happy to do research based on an individual pet's needs.
Both brothers have a deep interest in healthy diet and lifestyles – for both humans and pets. Sevryn, 25, with a pre-veterinary degree in Animal and Veterinary Sciences from the University of Rhode Island, spent two years training with Thomaston Feed founder and cousin Mark Poveromo.
Luca, 27, a graduate of University of Pittsburgh, has a finance background. With a life-long interest in personal fitness, nutrition, and healthy eating, he is also a certified personal trainer.
"My nutritional background translates well to dogs and cats," Luca said. "For example, it's as important for pets as humans to limit carbohydrates so that their main source of energy is derived from fats and protein."
The Sheleskys thoroughly vet every product they stock, researching questions such as: Where are the foods made?
- Are all the ingredients sourced within the US? If not, do they come from reputable sources?
- Are the ingredients organic? GMO?
- What is the quality of the protein? (bought from local farmers? free range? etc.)
- Has there ever been a recall?
- Are there any artificial preservatives in the foods?
Thomaston Feed is located at 688 Westwood Ave. in River Vale.
