The Women Veteran Writers Workshop is free to attend and open to qualified veterans and active duty military service members. Writers of all talent levels are encouraged to attend the nine-week seminar that begins Oct. 17 at ArtsWestchester, 31 Mamaroneck Ave. in White Plains.

The course, taught by David Surface, Veterans Writing Workshop director and lead instructor, will offer constructive and positive feedback while delving into how to implement various writing techniques and transforming ideas into words. Among the class themes will be a discussion about what it means to be, and what is the image of, a veteran.

“Women veterans’ stories haven’t been told enough,” Surface said in a statement. “We want to give them an opportunity to speak and be heard. Women have been in conflicts for years – past workshop participants have included women who served in Vietnam, Korea and Somalia – and they each have their own story to tell. By bringing these stories to the community, I hope the workshop will help residents to understand that veterans are each individuals with their own voices and perspectives on life.”

The workshop will publish each writer’s work in a high-quality anthology designed to inspire a dialog between its writers and civilians through public readings and events.
