Matthew J. Koziol, 90, Longtime Cliffside Park Resident

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. -- Matthew J. Koziol, of Cliffside Park, died on Friday, March 3. He was 90.

Born in Brooklyn, Koziol lived in Bayonne and Jersey City, before he and his wife settled in Cliffside Park, where they lived together for over 60 years. He played baseball in high school and was offered an opportunity to try out for the then-New York Giants.

A Marine veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he attended John Marshall Law School for a period of time and then opened his first business in Union City. He later opened City Furniture on Main Street, in Hackensack. He was the president of the North Hudson Lions Club.

Koziol enjoyed playing handball, tennis, pool and poker. "Above all, he valued his family and in his later years enjoyed watching his granddaughter's sports and performance activities," information from the funeral home noted. "He was well known for an exceptional sense of humor, which he maintained to the end."

He is survived by his wife Eileen (Seidenberg) Koziol; children Kathleen Koziol Goodfellow and Matthew J. Koziol Jr.; granddaughter Kelly Goodfellow; and sister Theresa Theobald. 

He was preceded by his daughter, Karen Koziol, and his sister, Sophie Reszutek.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7, at the A.K. Macagna Funeral Home, 495 Anderson Ave., in Cliffside Park. The funeral will be from the funeral home at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, then to Church of the Epiphany, in Cliffside Park, for a 10 a.m. mass. Interment will follow, at Holy Cross Cemetery, in North Arlington.
