Traces Of Toxic Carcinogen Found In Bergen, Passaic Drinking Water

A toxic chemical recently found near the Wanaque Reservoir has been detected in the drinking water supply of several municipalities in Bergen and Passaic counties, along with more than almost 80 other water systems in New Jersey, NorthJersey.com reports.

The following towns have traces of 1,4-dioxane (the state groundwater standard is 0.40 micrograms per liter [ug/L]), according to the Environmental Protection Agency:

  • Ringwood: 0.10 ug/L
  • Pompton Lakes: 0.53 ug/L
  • Hawthorne: 0.14 ug/L
  • Totowa: 0.73 ug/L
  • Mahwah: 0.21 ug/L
  • Ramsey: .36 ug/L
  • Oakland: 0.47 ug/L
  • Park Ridge: 0.17 ug/L
  • Ridgewood: 0.15 ug/L
  • Fair Lawn: 3.24 ug/L
  • Elmwood Park: 0.14 ug/L
  • Wallington: 0.13 ug/L
  • Garfield: 0.74 ug/L
  • USR: 0.072 ug/L
