Monday's total was not far off the total 272 animals hunted last season. The warm temperatures, compared to last year's cold, likely had something to do with it, NJ.com reported.

One hundred thirty-eight bears were taken in Sussex County, followed by 41 in Warren, 20 in Passaic, 15 in Morris and two in Bergen.

The largest animal hunted Monday weighed in at 658.5 lbs., NJ.com said.

As in years past, the start of bear hunting season was met with some protest, NJ.com reported.
