Eastwick College Heats Up Culinary Partnership With Bergen County

HACKENSACK, N.J.– Eastwick College students will have the opportunity to work with their culinary instructor in the professional grade kitchen at the Bergen County Housing, Health, and Human Services Center, officials announced.

Every Tuesday and Thursday when school is in session, the students will prepare restaurant quality dishes, which will be donated to shelter clients, officials said. 

“This is a laudable and civic minded undertaking for Eastwick College,” said Freeholder Vice-Chair Tracy Zur. “Students will be getting invaluable hands on experience while contributing to the well-being of individuals confronting homelessness. This is a truly forward thinking relationship.”

This program is part of a partnership between the college and Bergen County's Department of Human Services and Housing Authority. 

"Our mission is to help the most vulnerable and struggling people in Bergen County, finding ways large and small to improve their lives and make them feel valued in their communities," said Jane C. Linter, the director of Bergen County Department of Human Services. "This opportunity embodies that mission by making our shelter guests feel special as they seek the services they need to get back on their feet.”

“This public-private partnership is a win-win,” added Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco. “Local students have the opportunity to improve their culinary skills in a state-of-the-art kitchen and give back to the community. At the same time, this helps us provide a greater variety of high quality, nutritional meals to shelter clients.”

The Eastwick Foundation has raised $100,000 for local food banks, President Thomas M. Eastwick said. 

"As shelter manager it is exceptionally exciting to be adding a partnership that quite literally adds to the menu,” said Lynn Bartlett, the Housing Authority’s executive director.
