Bergen County Freezes Most Hiring Amid Layoffs, Legal Wrangling

HACKENSACK, N. J. -- Don't bother to look at the Bergen County website for job listings now that there's a temporary hiring freeze for most county jobs as officials work through a legal challenge to layoffs, NorthJersey.com reports.

The hiring freeze was disclosed in response to a question at a Freeholder meeting earlier this week, the story said. County Administrator Dominic Novelli later said the freeze started in September when officials decided to layoff 21 employees on Nov. 1, NorthJersey.com reported.

Those layoffs have been challenged in federal court by eight of those employees who said the layoffs are a result of their support of former County Executive Kathleen Donovan, the story said. The freeze does not apply to all positions, such as nurses in county facilities or juvenile detention officers, NorthJersey.com reports.
